I had a great comment left in the picture of my groceries for the week, regarding if Ill be sharing this large amount of food. Truth be told, low fat high carb (healthy complex carbed) foods are very low in calories and high in nutrients, but must be eaten in larger portions then lets say a steak and buttered potatoes. We advocate sticking to a high carb, low fat, plant based diet for optimal health and a lean toned physique. It has worked for hundreds of competitors and olympic / professional athletes and is recommended by leading physicians in the industry now that research is coming into the light regarding the cancer causing effects of high animal protein and cancer, which I had a first hand experience with. For comparison purposes, take a look at the average number of calories per pound in various types of foods: Would it be possible to overeat on broccoli? No. How about nuts? A cup of cashews is 800 calories. I don’t know about you, but I could easily consume a cup of nuts in no time! As people begin making a sincere effort to choose healthier foods, they often decide to switch from snacking on candy and chips to snacking on nuts. Even though nuts may be healthier, they actually have a HIGHER calorie density than junk food, so our aspiring healthy eater may actually start to gain weight instead of losing--and then wonder why this doesn’t work for them. When we refine foods, we generally remove water, fiber, and nutrients. This increases the calorie density, even in cases where the food is still basically a healthy food. On top of this, your body does not have the required nutrients placed in nature (for a reason) to help your body digest this man made creations. In return, some may be stored as fat or treated like a toxin, as your body doesnt recognize it. Do you want that? Absolutely not!! Compare grapes, at about 280 calories per pound and raisins at 500 calories per pound. The only difference is the amount of water. So which are we more likely to overeat, grapes or raisins? Again, many people begin snacking on dried fruit, not realizing that if they ate fresh fruit instead, they would be consuming far less calories. Characteristics of low calorie-density foods are: • High in water content • High in fiber This is why vegetables and fruits are the lowest in calorie density. They have a lot of water in them, and lots of fiber and bulkiness. • Vegetables...................................100 per pound • Fruits...........................................300 per pound Unrefined carbohydrates (e.g. rice, potatoes)................500 per pound • Legumes (beans, peas and lentils)........600 per pound • Fatty protein (e.g. meat and cheese).........1000 per pound Refined carbohydrates (e.g. breads, crackers).........1400 per pound Junk food (e.g. cookies, chips, candy)....2300 per pound Nuts and seeds...........................2800 per pound Oil and fat..................................4000 per pound !! I can easily keep my body fat percentages low by consuming whole plant based foods such as veggies, beans, lentils, rice, potatoes, fruits and sometimes vegan proteins pre or post workout, all while keeping my cancer under control in comparison to my old bodybuilding high animal protein diet.
