I have been admiring these great images of Belted Kingfishers from the wonderful photographers in this group. I have also never seen one in person !!! It was near the top of my NF bucket list and then we we went to Merritt for our first visit this season. They were all over the place you could not drive more then a 100 yards without seeing one or two. I am happy to say that it is now off my list!! A Male Belted Kingfisher in Merritt. A little info on the species I found on line !! With its top-heavy physique, energetic flight, and piercing rattle, the Belted Kingfisher seems to have an air of self-importance as it patrols up and down rivers and shorelines. It nests in burrows along earthen banks and feeds almost entirely on aquatic prey, diving to catch fish and crayfish with its heavy, straight bill. These ragged-crested birds are a powdery blue-gray; males have one blue band across the white breast, while females have a blue and a chestnut band.
