I have been asked many times why I chose to homeschool my children. There were a handful of reasons, initially, and that initial list of reasons has grown as I have grown as a mom and home educator over the years. When I pulled my oldest out of the public system, mid year 5th grade, the catalyst to do so was quite obvious for me. He was an exceptionally bright kid who was being left behind inside the system. It seemed to me, in regards to his primary education, which is the most crucial and foundational layer in ones education, I was settling for mediocrity and that didnt sit well with me. Combine that with the issues of bullying and the administrations utter failure to get a handle on this both inside the classroom and on the playground, I became quickly the mom who left the system with the clear intention of providing the best educational environment for my children, where they could both learn and flourish in their studies. When I left behind the public system, there was no clear plan, only the conviction and determination to provide my children something more. I have continued to homeschool all these years because these words by Mr. Robinson are 100% true!! This should be the goal of education and the homeschool environment unlike any other (my opinion) provides the foundation for children to enjoy learning, to discover their talents and passions and to flourish as they grow and learn. In homeschooling, parents have the blessing and the opportunity to custom fit the classroom to their childrens unique way of learning, to their strengths, their weaknesses and to their areas of interest. There is not a government program or any number of standardized tests that can do that effectively!! Why? Because children are individuals, not business models that can be manipulated, measured, charted and turned for profit. Furthermore, it is this same quote by Mr. Robinson that proves Common Core, CSCOPE, Race to the Top, No Child Left Behind, etc, etc, etc… has been and will be an utter educational disaster!! The root of these government programs, to create national standards, to predict outcomes, to control what is learned, is plain and simple school to work, it has the underpinnings of Socialism, Statism and Fascism all in one. As Charlotte Iserbyt, a department of education appointee in the Reagan administration and whistleblower said, Government education is purposefully limited learning for life long laborers. My friends, for decades, it has been the clear agenda to dumb down education. This just didnt begin under President Obama and Common Core. Any doubts, research it out for yourself.
