I have felt VERY uncomfortable in interviews in which I wore an Afro because the aura from the interviewer was negative and the first thing they looked at was my hair. I met the requirements and everything. They would appear as if they liked me and will most likely consider me but it usually end up not getting the job. Interesting thing is during these interviews I noticed how frequently they looked at my hair. My hair should not have been the focus of their attention. I wonder if my hair was a distraction from them focusing on how i was handling the interview. The positions in which I had these interviews were for Receptionist/Administrative Assistants and Clerk. Basically Admin/clerical positions. It depends what job you are going for in which an employer WILL discriminate covertly and saliently. Most employers want a particular look in terms of hair type, personality and clothing style. I TRULY believe at teh FIRST sight of an employer seeing a person to be interviewed they INSTANTLY know if they would consider this person or not...but because of the EOE they HAVE to give the candidate a chance and PRETEND to like and consider them...when its likely they dont. - Andrea Brown
