I have little sympathy for most of Macaulays stories but there is some urgent truth in the music comments at the end of the review. Legacy companies will have to deal with aging repertory but all companies who use fake music will have to face the fact that they are shooting themselves in the foot every time they put it on. It has been a feature of both big and small companies saving themselves money while at the same time diminishing the value of the live dance experience. This was true of a recent performance of Cunninghams company in Los Angeles where bad sound engineering and an old track literally drove people from the hall. Some even strapped on their iphone headpieces while the show was in progress. Cool, but not what Cage probably had in mind. Some established companies have never used live music, even dancing to classical scores which demand it. The last season of Paul Taylor trading a better hall for live music in a funkier one was a poor choice. Id rather have live music in a dumpy joint than faking it in a grand hall any day. Ghost town indeed. Good metaphor, for once.
