I have many problems with the musical Les Miserables, yet there are portions of it that move me very much. One of them is Eponine. In my mind she is the most innocent person in the play (I have not read Hugos large novel). Fantine is horribly misused and deceived and crushed by life, but Eponine somehow resists and sees through her own self-deception about Marius. How many of us share the dazzling beauty of life when in a dream of our own making only to crash down into reality where everything is flat, ordinary, and disappointing. Here is a young and noble soul who has had every reason to become harsh and bitter. All she has known is lies and mistreatment, and contempt. The most noble sentiment she has shown to her is just to be completely ignored by nearly everyone. Yet, she is not bitter or angry at Marius, and still loves him enough to take rifle fire meant for him. She is happy and content to die in his arms. The song On my own is quite powerful in this way. On my own Pretending hes beside me All alone I walk with him till morning Without him I feel his arms around me And when I lose my way I close my eyes And he has found me In the rain the pavement shines like silver All the lights are misty in the river In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight And all I see is him and me forever and forever And I know its only in my mind That Im talking to myself and not to him And although I know that he is blind Still I say, theres a way for us I love him But when the night is over He is gone The rivers just a river Without him The world around me changes The trees are bare and everywhere The streets are full of strangers I love him But every day Im learning All my life Ive only been pretending Without me His world will go on turning A world thats full of happiness That I have never known I love him I love him I love him But only on my own https://youtube/watch?v=_EOla4fbRFM
