I have read all your comments on Black Friday and it put me to thinking. I also googled some stuff to help me get a better idea on Black Friday, Yes I can see the connection with the shops being in the Black instead of the Red but that only tells a kind of story IMO. One thing I know is that we here in Ireland use the term Black for many things,. even many Irish names have black in them ( In Irish) Anyway if I was in the city say in and around Christmas and someone asked me was it crowded I might respond with Yes it was Black - meaning it was jam packed. Another use of the word might be more unusual and Do Not think this is racist in any way but if I hit my thumb with my hammer I might fling the hammer away or off the roof calling it a Black F***er .. As I say the black in this case is meaning evil and nothing racist. So Black Friday seemed to have started in Philadelphia and it was used to describe the jam packed shops and streets on the day after Thanksgiving. The other explanation about the shops going from red into black was used after 1971//. And yes we do still use the therm Black here, ie , the Train was Black with people , The Town is Black today , The Shops are Black :) I am not saying Black Friday name originated from an Irish term but anything is possible. After all , the Cities , Shops , Caffs , transit , etc will all be Black today :) . Now dont kill me for my observations . I dont hold with the shop red and black theory as many shops will be doing just fine all year and of course you have the January sales and much more . OH twill be interesting so it twill the response :) , I just hope you get a few bargains on some stuff that is very cheap and that you dont really need but still as it didnt cost much you just had to buy it ,,, Ahahahaa Have a great day ~Sean
