I have received many phone calls, emails and Facebook messages - TopicsExpress

I have received many phone calls, emails and Facebook messages lately from constituents who are upset and concerned about some of the serious public health issues that have put our communities in the news. The conversations almost always end with me being asked, So what are you going to do about it? Heres a better question: What are YOU going to do about it? There are a handful of extremely dedicated and courageous public servants who have asked the tough questions and have absorbed a lot of abuse because they decided to stand up for what they believe to be right. But if you think your obligation to the cause ends when you cast a vote, youre mistaken. As wonderful as it would be for someone to come in and completely fight your battle on your behalf while you get to sit on the sidelines, it just isnt going to work that way. So many people come back with Well, I cant say anything because... followed by any one of a number of excuses; some of which are better than others, very few of which are truly justifiable and some of which are just clear cop-outs. If something is important to you, its up to you to find a way to be part of the solution. You need to help the people trying to help you. You dont necessarily need to be on the front lines, but you cant stay hiding in the shadows. As Ive learned firsthand, when you are willing to accept a disproportionate share of the risk to solve a problem, its time to step back and get help before you do more harm than good. If the people being impacted by a problem seemingly dont care enough to step up, why should those people expect anyone else to do so? I know what Im going to do, which is keep fighting to expose the truth about the corruption and lies that could have serious consequences for our communities. But Ill end by asking my original question: What are YOU going to do about it?
