I have to share this. So Ive been a member at my current gym for about 4 years. There is a woman in her 60s who is disabled and requires a wheelchair whom Ive seen at the gym regularly. Well, its hurricane season and we get major t-storms and downpours practically every day until November. Anyways, Im pulling into the parking lot of the gym this afternoon. The clouds are dark, and the raindrops are starting to come down. I see the woman at her car trying to get her wheelchair hitched onto the lift at the back of her car and her walker was leaning up against the car. As Im parking my car, at least 4 young guys at different times walk right past her, as she clearly is struggling through the rain. I get out of my car, with my big gym bag, water bottle, and high heels, and go right to her. I kindly say, Mam, would you like some help? The woman put her head down for a moment and then said, As a matter of fact, I need help with my legs. They keep slipping since the rain made the footrail wet. So I drop all my stuff, squat down, and began manipulating her legs to bend. She was clearly paralyzed from her quads down, maybe from MS. And as she and I got drenched, all I kept thinking was Im so glad I was there to help her. I didnt feel sorry for her because of her disability, since she is active and independent, and quite frankly sweet. I felt sorry that no one helped her. How can someone walk right past someone who just needed a little assistance? sigh
