I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. I sure did. As we head into the new year, I would like to wish everyone a happy new year and leave you with this thought. Last night, our family went to a movie theater in Salt Lake City. I was struck with a couple of things: 1) how amazing it was to see a cluster of restaurants, theaters, and shops so concentrated in one spot, and 2) how much growth has been happening in the Salt Lake Valley. I noticed how houses have encroached upon the foothills and how the nightscape seems bursting to the seams with glimmering lights. As I usually do after a drive into the city, I felt grateful that Tooele County is full of open space and has fewer of everything: people, traffic, lights, sprawl, crowds. With the prison relocation coming up into the forefront of our political discussion, we have a chance to ask ourselves, how do we see Tooele County growing in the next couple of decades? What do we envision building into our space someday? Should we be pro-active and control that vision, and does it jive with how our legislators view our county? If they are not the same, do we let our state legislators dictate our future or do we assert our own? ~ Jewel
