I just did a.search on ukuleles in the UK school system and I came across this article in a national newspaper. I maybe bias towards the ukulele but please Ofsted, think before you act. Here is a section of the article..... The pupils, who love learning the instrument made famous by Forties music hall star George Formby, took great pride in their band, which had built up an increasingly complex repertoire. It was ruled (by Ofsted) that the ukulele sessions did not represent a wide enough musical experience for the youngsters, even though pupils spoke enthusiastically to inspectors about their enjoyment and pride in their achievements. One parent, who asked not to be named, said: “The band is good and it sounds wonderful no matter what Ofsted says. The children were very upset at the criticism and they are all learning to read music as a result which is just wonderful. Who do these people think they are coming into good schools and making everyone feel awful?” The Ofsted report on New Road primary school in Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire, said: “Music lessons and the curriculum do not provide sufficient challenge and, as a result, pupils do not make adequate progress. Achievement in music is inadequate.” So my question is - did the Ofsted inspectors actually go and watch and listen to an actual performance ? - did they look at the faces of the children with pride of achievement - and also their parents ? I welcome your comments.
