I just listened to a segment on Triple Js Hack program. They were discussing proposed federal legislation that would see the creation of a commissioner for cyber bullying. The responsibility of this office would be to ensure that children are protected from bullying and harassment on social networking sites. Online bullying is harmful to the mental health of children and they need to be protected from harm by the government apparently. This shows good family values on the part of the federal government. They are helping protect the little children. Yay. As of Dec 31 there were 1144 children locked in detention centres in Australia, Christmas Island, and Nauru. There are an additional 1637 in Community detention. These numbers do not count those that have arrived since the media blackout or those in Papua.
