I knew Id be seeing a legend and expected a sort of merry tribute to all thats been. I didnt expect a purely honest and independently compelling performance that stood so beautifully beyond its own history. McCartney was outstanding. This comment has nothing to do with nostalgia or earned respect but rather everything to do with that which was all around me in the moment: Magnificent songs performed with mastery and humility. There was a kindness and empathy in McCartneys bearing that nearly brought me to tears, as did the losses that surround him which he consciously and sweetly bears. The actual moment - or rather hours - superseded that notion of legend and became personal in my experience, and my memory. I saw a man dancing in the aisle with his ten year old girl. I saw older women on their feet for hours with no complaint. I saw joy, real joy. I experienced my own, the kind that isnt frivolous; the kind that bears weight. I did not expect magic or anything particularly close to it. And yet there it was.
