I like the idea of positivity movements, so therefore each day in September I’m going to call out someone I know who inspires me and give a little background on why. If you like the sound of it why not do it yourself. Day 10 Its my movement, so i make the rules.... today is slightly different, today is about the Cast of A Public Reading of an Unproduced Screenplay About the Death of Walt Disney Im lucky to see a fair bit of theatre, more recently due to my workload Ive had to be pickier with the shows i see, however during this busy time there is a one certainty, if Nick Blake is performing i will be there. Ive known Nick since about the age of 6, growing up in a small town in the Wairarapa Nick was one of the first creative people in my life, his influence albeit indirect was crucial during my formative years. Seeing him perform in my youth planted a seed in a land of creative possibilities. Currently Nick is staring as Roy in Danny Mulherons play A Public Reading of an Unproduced Screenplay about the Death of Walt Disney. Dont let the name fool you, this is a piece of constructed theatre about the later less magical years of great Walt Disney. A vain Disney is played wonderfully by one of my childhood TV heroes, David McPhail (a hero i got to meet and talk with tonight, TICK) . The performance delivered stylistically as a screenplay table read centers on Disneys neuroses as he approaches his death. Those closest to him towards the end, his brother Roy (Blake), his estranged daughter, portrayed by the incomparable Jessica Robinson and his football brained simpleton of son-in-law Ron, played in a hilariously Coenesque manner by Richard Falkner all act as fodder for Disneys insecure vanity as he selfishly scripts his own demise. This is no doubting the brilliance on display in this play, and without bias (as much is possible) i feel its one you should all see. Today im inspired by performance theatre, im inspired by my childhood hero & im inspired my friends. you can book to see the play at Circa, do it you wont regret it. circa.co.nz/site/Shows/A-Public-Reading-of-an-Unproduced-Screenplay-about-the-Death-of-Walt-Disney
