I like to share things that pop up as Im enjoying my (ok...sometimes more than once) daily FB visit. Things that really hit home to me. Before I continue, Im not interested in a debate. Just keep on scrolling if you have anything but positive and constructive comments, because this is not the purpose of my post. Ive gone over this question in my mind a hundred times...if not thousands in my career. Where are the black teachers? No, I wasnt pc in my question...I know that since Im posting openly, I should have worded it differently...you know, and yes, I am going to spell it out...Where are the African American teachers? But thats not how the kids ask...the black kids I mean. And they do ask. Often it comes out sounding like distrust. Especially in my current position as a substitute teacher, since Im typically not around long enough to have that all-important relationship that the real teacher has built with students. Our teachers of a lighter skin color do an amazing job building relationships with all students...its not about that. I know that in any discussion about race, things get heated. This doesnt have anything to do with how, if, what, why, the tint of ones skin makes one person a better teacher than another. I consider myself extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to teach in all levels, from pre school through high school, in every classroom situation available in my District. I have had some wonderful role models, regardless of race, but Im particularly thinking of teachers, parents, staff & administrators
