I love Nick Markakis. Hes been a great Oriole. Professional hitter, very goood defender, works the count. Baseball player in every sense of the word and great in the community. Slam dunk for an Oriole Hall of famer. Markakis numbers have been trending down for a long time, even before the wrist and ab injuries and into his 30s now, will likely continue to do so. He quietly lost a lot of range in the outfield, even though he made no errors. His speed has noticably waned. A player into his 30s doesnt gain foot speed or bat speed. Markakis was originally paid to hit 20 homers, bat 300, hit 50 doubles, with an excellent arm and range. For the most part, he didnt live up to the contract. He figures to get somewher close to that again. THAT Markakis isnt coming back. Sentimental reasons is why fans want him signed to a nice contract. If we were to acquire a player from another team with similar stats for the kind of money he wants, fans would be up in arms. I absolutely LOVE Nick. One of my favorites ever but I love the Orioles more. I think at this point, Nick is a singles hitter that works the count, plays a good outfield, great in the clubhouse and in the community. He still has a good arm (once great) and gets great jumps on balls but his range took a major dip because the avg speed he once had is gone. Rip me if you want, but this screams FOURTH OUTFIELDER.. If I were Gm, with a tear in my eye, I would overpay him as a 4th outfielder because hes been an excellent Oriole. 3 yr and 25 million would be my max. Again, one of my favorites. Love Nick, just love the Orioles more...
