I love this piece from Brett Toellners KC Dog Blog: btoellner.typepad/kcdogblog/2013/10/save-them-all-report-from-best-friends-no-more-homeless-pets-conference.html When I think about it, as a term No-Kill has a terrible, driving sense of desperation about it. In the face of slaughter you just want the killing to stop. No-Kill is standing on the picket lines, lying down in front of the bulldozers, its the hard, weary, endless work of making change. And although were nowhere near the end, you can see the ripples, even in Australia. Certainly No-Kill hasnt done its work, but maybe theres time to stop and take a breath. And maybe Save Them All is that breath. Save Them All is all aspiration and forward movement. Its a challenge for the next part of the struggle. I particularly like it as a catch cry because for way too long elements of the rescue society have used the the phrase as a term of condemnation. The people, they sneer, who believe you can save them all. Implicit is this is the idea that those who want to save them all, are irresponsible and unethical (because even in the world of rescue, there exists the irresponsible other). Implicit in their condemnation is the idea that there is only way way to save an animal. Save Them All needs some parsing - what do we mean by saving when were talking terminally ill animals, or aggressive dogs or feral cats? But just because we dont have all the answers, doesnt mean we cant start asking the questions. No is just making things stop - save is the chance to start again.
