“I never thought I would give this speech”. These are the words of Peter Piot during yesterday’s remembrance ceremony of Joep Lange and Jacqueline van Tongeren. Many words were used to reflect on their lives and passions, Joep being described as not only a researcher and a doctor, but primarily an activist, looking for the right and the ambitious; charming, passionate, reflective, but also firm and stubborn when necessary. And Jacqueline who with only a few hints and soft wording could turn things completely upside down. It was intensely sad to mourn over their deaths, together with so many colleagues and friends in the audience. But the Netherlands Dance Theater was breathtakingly touching and I found it heartwarming how many people felt inspired and motivated by Joep and Jacqueline. Someone expressed this feeling in only four words: “Inaction kills. Act now!”
