I once wanted to write a science fiction short where a guy breaks into Jim Hensons Creature Shop one night, intending to steal the most famous of the characters. Sneaking around the dark warehouse, he keeps having the feeling that hes being watched, that things are moving just out of the corner of his eye. Finally he makes his way to the table that holds Kermit the Frog, but just as he gets there, the lights come on and he screams, finding himself surrounded by dozens of brightly-colored creatures. It turns out the Muppets are alive; each is an alien from its own planet, and theyre here to study Earth humans. The thief is never heard from again. And thats actually true -- I DID once intend to write that story. But I didnt write it because I figured theyd come after me when they realized Id discovered their secret.
