I put up a post about skate boarders threatened with losing their park 5 Aug I think (Ill post it below again) anyway I stopped and spoke to the youths skateboarding today and was happy to find theyd been warned and had stood up for themselves, had made some kind of petition/submission to a seminar organised by the council. Theyd met with the designer of the park and to his credit, in spite of my dislike of his design, he supported them. Theyre confident theyre going to keep the right to use the area, but theres the possibility of some kind of sound barrier, which will be an eyesore for sure, but at least theyll keep the space they seized. With screeching tram wheels, cars, trucks, some idiots complained about noise which, unlike the actual noise, ceases pretty much at sunset. Anyway great to see that the young people defended themselves. Hopefully their optimism will be confirmed. original post: I love living in inner-city Carlton except for one thing: the philistine, NIMBY residents groups. In response to a letter left in our letter box from god knows who, I have submitted this letter presumably to the state govt given the email listed for comments. If you live in the area I urge you to support human use of our park known as Lincoln Square. Why it was ever turned into a supposed shrine for the victims of a bombing in Bali is anyones guess. And if it was to be so, at least they could have given those people a shrine in which people found solace sitting, enjoying the shade of the gorgeous trees they destroyed. And no one is complaining that the childrens play equipment just continues to degenerate with no maintenance. anyway this is my letter to whom it concerns, I would like to make known my opinion on what to do with skate boarding in Lincoln Square Carlton. Firstly, a quite beautiful park boasting decades old camellia bushes was destroyed and turned into a mausoleum. How anyone could think it was a good idea I cant imagine. The area, concreted over, with kitche fountains is unbearable in summer its so hot and cold and dismal in the winter. The only saving grace was the beuatiful avenue of aged fig trees survived, an elm and grass. I am quite pleased the youth of the city have turned the area into a useful place of leisure. All hail to their disobedience, ignoring the signs. The only problem is its a bit threatening for someone my age to navigate the area, but there are plenty of paths around it and the young people are quite mindful of pedestrians Ive found, being 70 years old and using a walking stick. So I have no complaints about them. So if the area were turned into a properly designated area with the surrounding park preserved and paths which facilitate access to the grassed areas from Swanston St without having to cross the concrete Id be delighted. It is actually quite entertaining to sit quietly at times and observe their efforts to improve their skills. I look forward to my grandchildren being able to use the area for skate boarding. But I repeat I only support this move if the remaining park is preserved and properly maintained. I notice that the childrens play ground, tiny as it is goes unattended and the equipment is degraded, in need of maintenance which should be done.
