I realize that most people believe that being vegan (i.e. consuming a plant-based diet) is a radical, even strange, lifestyle choice. Such is the power of early childhood cultural indoctrination. Some make the argument that human beings are omnivores (which is true) and therefore need meat in their diets (which is not true). If the research in this linked article is correct (as usual more work needs to be done), it seems that human beings are unique in the animal kingdom in that their consumption of mammals invites cancer and tumor growth. As the article begins, While people who eat a lot of red meat are known to be at higher risk for certain cancers, other carnivores are not... At the very least, an interesting insight into why human beings respond so poorly in terms of health to red meat consumption. Red meat, of course, comes from mammals. As an aside for those who argue we evolved to eat meat, cancers and tumors usually strike human beings later in life after theyve reproduced. Consequently, the genetic makeup that puts people at risk for cancers from eating mammals would not be suppressed in future generations.
