I recently submitted my responses to the candidate questions asked by the League of Women Voters of Dane County. Primary candidates responses will be posted on the Leagues website; Ill post the link once its up, but in the meantime, here are their questions and my answers:: 1. What in your professional and community background qualifies you for this elective office?: I currently serve on Fitchburg’s Board of Review as an alternate member. Through my day job as a Capitol staffer (research assistant and committee clerk), I work with the law almost every day and am well-versed in the legislative process and in constituent relations, so I will be able to hit the ground running. I also served a three-year term, including one year as secretary, on the board of directors of the Verona Area Community Theater, in which I have been active for over twenty years. 2. What is the most effective way for the city to allocate resources to address homelessness and racial inequality?: The city should continue to pursue economic development in troubled neighborhoods. It is imperative to generate not only jobs, but also focuses of commercial or industrial stability. The city should also continue to investigate cost-effective options for transit expansion, to foster access to jobs, goods, and services that are farther afield. All this should be done in cooperation with the City of Madison, Dane County, and – particularly where youth achievement is concerned – the school districts that serve Fitchburg. 3. What other important issue faces the community you seek to represent, and how would you address it?: The city must strive to find the proper balance between development and preserving the urban/suburban/rural mix that makes Fitchburg appealing in the first place. While I support responsible development, I recognize that certain big-ticket projects may have needs that can only be met on sites currently outside the urban service area in order to be viable, so I am not prepared to take any options off the table. In any case, the city must ensure that it has the public safety resources to serve areas of new growth without diminishing service to existing neighborhoods.
