I spent the morning calculating feed costs.I compared feeding Buckeye Grow N Win with a small amount of oats and feeding Nutrena safechoice performance or Dumor 14% at recommended amounts. My conclusion is,that if I get my oats at the feed mill, and not Tractor supply or somewhere expensive,I will save roughly $165 a month and be sure my horses get all they need.Thats with free choice grass hay,and I finally have enough horses to be able to feed round bales, without the bales getting nasty/moldy from rain before they are eaten. I think this will work well for me.I cant usually feed the recommended amounts of grain. Some horses get way too fat, while others need more. So,feeding that way, requires me to purchase extra supplements and whatnot, and ends up being a royal pain, since I have to special order my supplements, and become the mad scientist, with tons of calculations on my chalk board....Quite frankly, this will make life easier. The youngsters will get what they need.I can add calories with oats and oil if needed. The obese mare will be more fit,not fat....yep Im liking this idea. And no soy bean hulls :) So far,I have been using the Nutrena version of a forage balancer (which is more expensive than Buckeye and not nearly as good of quality) for the last couple of months. And ALL of my horses are doing BETTER.Each individual has different needs to address too, from obesity to epiphisytis. And both of those major issues are getting much better! My bay colt who wants to grow so fast, has no more inflammation of the growth plates, and his mom is looking super shiny, but getting more trim.Everybodys eyes just sparkle and their hair coats are getting dapples.Yep,even my ORANGE horses have dapples.Im loving it.
