I studied at a humble Roman Catholic school in Mumbai, with students from various religious, socio-economic and linguistic backgrounds. Im grateful for the teachers and friends I had there. Nobody tried to convert me. Thats not what my school was into. I had the same opportunities to flourish as all the other kids did. I dont remember anyone trying to make me feel ashamed about having grown up in a Jain family. I recall people being respectful of my food choices. Yes, we did have a church in the school compound. I wasnt forced to go in. I had the opportunity to learn about various faiths, and I have grown up to be someone who enjoys the occasional quiet moment in a derasar, temple, dargah, church, gurudwara, or even by the sea or in a bookstore. This owes, in part, to the school I went to. Growing up is never easy for any kid. Schools are messed up institutions, that too is true. But I must speak up today and say that Im thankful I had teachers who instilled me in the ability to appreciate and learn from the beauty that thrives at the core of all spiritual traditions. That informs my vision for India. I want this country to be a place where practising ones faith is never a source of fear. Never.
