I think people should stop being offended by the manufactured “war on Christmas” and start expressing some outrage about the holiday that is actually in danger of being destroyed: Thanksgiving. 10 years ago businesses would be closed on this national holiday. Then McDonald’s started having breakfast and stores slowly started opening earlier and earlier, until now places are open at 6pm ON Thanksgiving. Many of you may see Thanksgiving shopping as a way to bond with your family, but the checkout girl who missed her baby’s first solid food Thanksgiving does not see it like this. Each and every time you go shopping on Thanksgiving you are hurting family values and putting out there the standard that saving a few dollars is more important than family traditions. People always say let’s “keep the CHRIST in Christmas.” Isn’t it also important to keep the THANKS in Thanksgiving? Let’s be Thankful for what we have, instead of racing to see how we can get more. If you get bored sitting around the house after your meal, let me give you some anti-holiday-shopping ideas that can help you be thankful. -The day before, take your kids shopping at the dollar store for personal hygiene items, and on the evening of Thanksgiving drop the items off to a homeless shelter. -Volunteer at a shelter. -Clean out your closets and take your old clothes to a goodwill drop off. -Take a Christmas tree to an elderly person and assemble it for them. -Make a pie and take it to someone who just had surgery. -Make Christmas ornaments with your kids. -Make a youtube video about all the things you’re thankful for. -Visit a shut-in. -Talk with some old people at a nursing home. -Go to bed early so you can wake up and go black FRIDAY shopping.
