“I think that Megyn Kelly is to professional journalism and professional journalism ethics what Clive Bundy and Donald Sterling are to race relations in this country,” Weinstein tells CDN. “I have no problem, you know, you probably saw the letter that our lawyers sent to her and to Fox, copying to Dobson. I have no problem with a knock-down, drag-out debate about these issues, but when you lie and you tell people over and over again that I’m an atheist or in the case of Dobson, calling me a ‘professional atheist’, and that we’re an atheistic organization, that does two things that are particularly damaging. “Number one, it tends to incite even more threats against me, my family, and our foundation. We do represent over 37,000 active duty members of the U.S. military, 96 percent of whom are not atheists; they’re Christians, they’re Protestants or Roman Catholics. We do have just under 800 atheists, agnostics, humanists, secularists, et cetera, but that tends to already further incite already unstable people. It’s an out-and-out lie. Now, I know I’m a public figure, which means I have to show reckless disregard for the truth, and that absolutely is reckless disregard, so that’s why this shot across the bow from our lawyers, which is ‘Don’t be doing that again — ever again’.
