I try not to ask questions I wouldnt be willing to answer, so here it goes. When did I know I was black? I knew I was black when my family moved to Memphis in 1980. I was 8. Our family was the only black family of about 15 on our street near Bartlett. The family next door was white and the father wouldnt let his kids play with me or my siblings. Not a year after we moved in, they moved out. I dont remember my parents ever explicitly explaining why, but we knew.
