I want to know when marketing places and such thought paying by the word for writing/editing was a good idea. Oh, sure, its a good idea: For them. For the diligent worker writer-bee, it tends to suck. Because in the world of copy-magic, less is usually more; show, dont tell; be succinct, etc. Also, it would be awesome if being kind of flaky wasnt a pre-req for most small companies who hire writer/editors. Who am I kidding? A lot of them are REALLY flaky. As I told someone the other day whos getting into this field The best job skill is being able to be a good cashier. Why? Because at some point youll need to pick up a job at Staples, probably-- never depend on or trust any company fully to help you put food on your table... because when it comes to budgets and their vacations, writers are the first to go. Its not that Im bitter, for I know most places mean well. But what I say is quite true. Anyhow, Im looking at going back to school to become a medical transcriptionist or something.
