Well, turns out that there was a LOT of scientific and engineering work on solar power going on throughout the Victorian era. Some amazing breakthrough were made: solar powered engines were built, solar cells made from selenium wafers were developed -- they thought they were going to run out of coal, you see. Yep, things were going great with solar energy in the 19th century -- and then they discovered what you could do with oil...
