I was angrily honked at today while crossing Magazine Street in the crosswalk at 8th. I occasionally work on Magazine as well and witness this happen to others multiple times an hour at intersections without a light. Its dangerous. Someone is going to get killed because drivers actually believe for some reason that they have the right of way. I dont understand why the crosswalks on Magazine are completely disregarded by most drivers. Even pedestrians are unsure of the crosswalks and are scared to cross the street. I walk past people idly standing at corners, frightened and confused about crossing. People shouldnt be scared to cross the street. Tourists on Magazine have even seriously asked me if pedestrians are supposed to yield to automobiles in New Orleans as theyve encountered it across the city, showing that it isnt like this everywhere. I think I heard at the Lafitte Greenway Expo that were changing to highly visible crosswalks city-wide, but I dont know when and might have even misheard. Does anyone know anything about that? In the meantime, what can we do? Who should I write? Im tired of seeing people, including the elderly and families with kids, get berated daily for crossing Magazine Street in a crosswalk as if it were a crime.
