I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 18 and was taking Insulin - TopicsExpress

I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 18 and was taking Insulin shots 2-3 times a day for the last 33 years. All the internists and endocrinologists I saw would assume that I was Type 1 and continued to have me on insulin shots. About 2 years ago, I started seeing an internist who continued to monitor my blood sugar. Then 2 months ago, he asked me, How much insulin are you on a day again? so I told him 10 units long lasting and about 5-10 fast acting insulin depending on what I eat. He thought about it for a sec and said, You cant be Type 1 then because you would need a lot more insulin than that if you are type 1. Type 1 people produce no insulin and would need a lot more than 10 plus units a day. Have you ever tried taking the pill? I told him no and we decided that I should try it so he put me on Medformin twice a day. Well, guess what? It worked so that mean I actually have Type 2 diabetes instead. I hardly need insulin anymore and only when I eat a very sweet dessert do I give myself an extra shot. That mean I was misdiagnosed at 18 and have been taking insulin shots unnecessarily for the last 33 freaking years. How about that? Not only is it much easier to control my diabetes through the pill, the bonus with switching from insulin to Medformin the last 2 months is that I lost 7 lbs too. :)
