I was just sitting around listening to oldies, which I dont - TopicsExpress

I was just sitting around listening to oldies, which I dont normally do, and ran across this song for the first time in a long time. That caused me to reminisce about 1972 or 73. I was driving for Go-Van out of Dallas, riding a fairly new White conventional with a 238 Detroit and a 10 speed Road Ranger. It had an inoperative, roof-mounted air conditioner and no radio or even an 8 track tape deck. It was just me and the truck as this was before CBs got popular. One of my semi-regular runs was hauling bananas from the Port of Galveston to El Paso on container trailers. It didnt matter what time of day I finally got the trailer off the ship from Honduras, the delivery time was early the next day. That meant all-night gettin it in a truck which could barely un-track itself empty. What a long ol road that was back then! Its 800 miles, and in a truck which did well to average 50 mph, it took awhile. The interstate ended just west of Junction, TX and you didnt see it again until almost El Paso. Most of it was 2 lane and the traffic was pretty heavy, even at night. My little 238 would scream up the hills with other trucks backed up behind me, then theyd roar past and Id catch them again on the downside. I know they were cussin me, but without a CB, at least I didnt have to listen to it. :-) Mile after boring mile, alone in the darkness across the God-awful emptiness of West Texas trying to stay awake. Sometimes, Id doze and run off the road or find myself hurtling down Ft. Griffin hill too fast. Sometimes, Id hallucinate and see things which werent there, but I had to keep going. Chug-a-chug-a-chug-a. Gotta get to El Paso! Gotta keep those poor bastards from running out of bananas! The only thing I could do to keep my mind occupied and stop thinking about that foam rubber mattress back there in the little box sleeper was sing to myself and this song was my favorite. It just seemed appropriate. Ill bet I sang it to myself a thousand times, over and over and over again. https://youtube/watch?v=7UVVS5-9HvA
