I was pondering Nancy Gates Peck’s reticence to join in the reunion festivities as she made a really good point. Many of us have not stayed in touch and don’t “know everyone”. And who wants to put themselves through memories that may not have been all rosy at that time? And then I thought… At what other time can you walk into a group of people that are exactly your age. Because of this demographic anomaly, many attending have been through similar experiences through the years. And we all have some of the same problems facing us today. We have been through financial highs and financial lows, from having great jobs to getting laid off; we have family issues…kids, grandkids, parents…and their various financial issues; we wonder where healthcare will be when/if we retire as we help our aged parents with that same dilemma now; we have rejoiced at the birth of loved ones and grieved at the deaths of others. We accept better living through chemicals and gladly take that blood pressure or heart medication knowing that our lives would be much worse and likely shorter without them. We don’t look like we did in high school, either. Our bodies are giving us clues that, whether through disease or the punishment we have put it through, we are older! We are resigned to the force of gravity (and wonder how it can actually occur intraday). Yet, we are all grateful for another day. We have gone about the business of living and finally come to the day when we can graciously re-meet one another and say “thank God you made it to the reunion: thank God you made it though life this far”. If you are still on the fence about coming consider that this is an Opportunity like no other. There will be valuable resources waiting for you…your classmates. You get to show up and say “I made it! I made it this far!” You won’t be met with a snub or derision. You will be met with a great big “Congratulations, so did we!” See you there. I’m getting my hugging arms ready for a workout
