I was raised to be kind to animals. I always loved them. We had - TopicsExpress

I was raised to be kind to animals. I always loved them. We had several animal companions: cat, dog, rabbit, bird. We took spiders outside and saved cats who were stray. One day when eating prawns I asked my Dad what the black line was, that we were removing from down the back, he told me it was excrement. My little kid brain was racing. If that was poo then that means it was alive. It was an animal. From that day on I couldnt eat them. By the time I was 12, I had decided I didnt want to eat meat as I knew it was an animal, I knew it was wrong, so my Mum after many attempts of Just have a mouthful, conceded defeat and let me become vegetarian. I thought that the other animal products didnt kill the animal and so therefore that was ok. How wrong I was. :( I stayed a vegetarian for the next 23 years until a vegan friend shared with me about how male chicks are considered a waste product of the egg industry and so are either ground up alive, gassed or suffocated. It broke my heart. I started to research into the egg and dairy industries. I then knew I had to go vegan. I tried and when unsupported at home, slipped back and forth for a few months. Then, as a family, we all went vegan together doing the 30 day Vegan Easy Challenge. I have never looked back. My resolve strengthens with every new day. I continued to watch movies like Earthlings, Peaceable Kingdom, Folks Over knives, etc and learnt so much more. I forced myself to watch footage of what happens to animals caught in the food production system. I felt that if they had to live it, then the least I owed them was to bear witness. Now all I see when I look at those products is the terror in their eyes, I see the cut up corpses that they are, I hear their cries, as they have their babies torn away. It is not food or clothes (leather, wool, silk) but part of an animal who wanted to live. My vegan life is one of joy. The joy of knowing that no one had to be harmed or killed in order for me to live. I have never been healthier. I have never been happier. My only sadness is that others can still not see the animal products for what they are. Otherwise compassionate, intelligent people are caught up in the lies of the animal agriculture industry. I implore you, take the time to educate yourself. You have the power to do so much good for yourself, the planet and of cause the animals. #veganeasychallenge #myveganstory #vegan
