I watched Eric Garners murder. It was filmed. At the beginning of the video, he is standing and interacting with those around him. Even though he Is having an encounter with the police, I remember a folksy tone to his voice. I could imagine talking with him. I felt I knew him. By the end of the video he had been strangled and was near death, all of it taking place in daylight, on a street where he was surrounded by people who were watching. I only played the video once. Kareem Lawrence had posted it immediately after the incident occurred. To think, all these months later, that there will be no trial where the police officer must be held accountable for his actions is an outrage. But its been happening and happening for decades. I havent viewed the heartbreaking video of Eric Garners murder again. It overwhelms me. A twenty-five-year-old film confronted us with the brutality of law enforcement out of control. Tragically, its ugliness is all too fresh.
