I watched an Oprah show once and the topic was focused on homes and interiors and how to create different kinds of moods within your immediate comfort zones. Oprah said something that struck a cord with me. For a long time I kept thinking about what she meant when she said- “your home should rise up to meet you” upon entering it. Although she was referring to the interior furnishings of your house, I got a sense she was also referring to the overall atmosphere or mood you create within your homes. To me, this encompasses not just the sight you behold, but also the smells that greet you and the thoughts and sentiments which they conjure up. The art of decorating the interiors of houses has always focused on comfort and style, however, no matter how stylishly furnished the interior of a home, an unwelcoming odour can diminish all its appeal. For centuries incense was burnt to counteract or obscure malodorous products of human habitation, but was widely perceived to also deter malevolent demons and appease the gods with its pleasant aroma (Wikipedia)… Nowadays Incense is still being used by many cultures across the globe as a means of not just aromatizing but also “purifying” homes. For those who don’t know it, Incense is simply an aromatic biotic material which releases fragrant smoke when burned.
