I would like to share the story of little Carson Evans. He is a two year-old boy with so much spunk, personality, and a smile that melts your heart. At 13 months old he was diagnosed with a laryngeal cleft (a gap between his esophagus and trachea, that allows food or fluid to pass into his airway). For the first year of his life, he had been silently aspirating (food, fluid, and/or stomach contents had been entering his lungs); this lead to him develop chronic lung disease. Since his cleft repair, he has had multiple lung infections, has spent the better part of the year in the intensive care unit and Primary Childrens Hospital; and, his lung function has continued to decrease significantly. Whenever hes well, and even when hes not, Carson loves to play with trains, cars, and dinosaurs; and, watch Monsters Inc. and Cars. He can also throw a ball unlike any two year-old youve ever seen. Carson has been requiring more and more respiratory support at home; support that would keep any other child in the hospital. However, this boy has a PICU RN as a mommy. His mom, Aletha, is a nurse in the very unit where his son frequently resides. There have even been instances where she has taken care of patients with her son a few doors down. Carson is currently the sickest he has ever been- on full ventilatory support, diagnosed with necrotizing pneumonia. When he recovers, he will spend 6-8 weeks in the hospital doing pulmonary rehab. Aletha is a single mom to Carson and his big brother, Marcus. She has been working tirelessly to support her boys; continuing to work in an already difficult and emotional environment, while carrying an increasingly heavy burden at home. A bunch of Alethas fellow nurses have banded together to create Team Carson. Our goal is to provide support to this little family in anyway they need. So many people have expressed interest in helping Carson and his family that we have set up a PayPal fund for Aletha to use in whatever way she may need. If you are interested in helping, you can log into paypal and send donations to teamcarsonforthewin@gmail. Aletha is so grateful for all the support. Lets keep it up. Feel free to share their story to anyone whom may benefit from it or who would be willing to help. *This message has been approved by Aletha Evans. :)
