I wrote this over 10 years ago. Thought I would share under the current state of our community. We should use our voice not violence! WHEN I SPEAK MY MIND... When I SPEAK my mind...my conscious and subconscious collide like two worlds in different hemispheres, speaking a language foreign to both. When I SPEAK my mind...I see black and white. Them against us, now us against them. Everywhere like the air we breath, polluted with racism like the big city smog. Middle class or no class. When I SPEAK my mind...I cry injustices from the top to the bottom. One lie to another. A right supposedly gained, a right truly denied. Incarcerated and ashamed, to one-day freedom and tranquility. When I SPEAK my mind...I examine what I hear: free speech decided by whom; the choice of education for my children; the right to vote; the decision to be heard; the youthful vibe of rap, the old smoothness of jazz. When I SPEAK my mind...a wealth of knowledge is shared. A dream becomes a reality. A perspective is opened for debate. The right to remain silent should be decided. When I SPEAK my mind...to stand up and be a man. To voice my pleasure or shout my dislikes. To seek whats mine. To fulfill my dreams, not Americas. When I SPEAK my mind...Im not asking for much, Im demanding without comprise. To take a stand and hold firm, or die in just pursuit.Speak Brother, Speak Sister. Speak... -Mark E. Hughes
