*********IMPORTANT NOTICE / READ CAREFULLY******* Ladies and Gentlemen, There is no easy way or manner to inform parents, grandparents and guardians of what I am about to present to you. In fact, my heart breaks at what I am having to talk about. No Police Chief, no one for that matter, wants to be the bearer of serious or difficult news. None the less, I have always been transparent, open and informative as possible towards you, the citizens of this community, our home. And, that is not about to change today, either. Please read this Post very carefully. Reframe from any derogatory remarks or comments as they would be and in fact are only counter productive to a positive outcome. First, NO students were injured in any way in the incident I am about to discuss. NO faculty or staff member were injured in any way as a result of the incident I am about to discuss. Again, NO ONE in or around our school was injured in ANY way as a result of this incident. Now, with that being said, early this morning multiple gun shots were fired by, at the time, an unknown person(s) in front of the Douglas Learning Academy, located off of Church St. on Samuel Wiley Drive in Cleveland. The school immediately went into lockdown and CISD Police Officers along with City Police Officers responded. Upon arrival multiple shell casings were observed in front of the school on Samuel Wiley Drive. Not knowing which way the gunfire was directed and or where the suspect(s) may be, CISD Police Officers sealed off the school. I and Lt. Shannon entered into the campus and searched the campus ensuring no one excluding students, faculty and staff were inside. Once everyone was accounted for and found to be uninjured, I ordered the campus remain on lockdown until further notice. CISD and City Police Officers continued to secure and process the scene in front of the school. Through the initial investigation on scene it was determined the school, students, faculty and staff were NOT the intended target of this gunfire. A residence across the street was in fact impacted my this gunfire and, thankfully, no one was injured there as well. Approximately two or three block away, while still on this scene, a second call of shots being fired was dispatched. Some Officers remained on scene at the school and others responded to the secondary scene a few blocks away. Both of these incidents remain under investigation. The school, after approximately one hour of lockdown was released to return back to normal operation. No vehicles, no part of the school was impacted by gunfire. The only structures impacted by gunfire were the two separate residences which were the intended targets of said gunfire. Again, NO student, NO faculty, NO staff members were injured as a result of this incident. It should be noted, all school personnel handled themselves with the utmost professionalism, speed and diligence in ensuring all of the students remained secure and safe. The students who were inside this school at the time did everything right. They listened to the instructions given and performed all the tasks covered and trained over in regards to serious threats and lockdown incidents. In closing, the photo of Sgt. Allen depicts the softer side, the much more pleasant side of our Duty here as Police Officers. The other photographs demonstrate, in part, just how much we train, train and train some more to actively engage and neutralize any threat which comes towards our students, faculty and staff members here at Cleveland ISD. Please, continue to support and work with us and help us here at the CISD Police Department to keep our schools and children safe. I still stand firm, this incident is not normal for our community. Not at all. We have far more good people here than bad and we will all push through this difficult time, together. We have come so far, and we as a School District and a Community are going to continue to move past this and move forward. Our children are depending upon us to accomplish this great task before us and I fully believe we will. Respectfully, Rex Evans Cleveland ISD Chief of Police
