Eighteen women and one girl formed The Cancer Fighters group to record I’m in the Mood for Dancing. Just like the Nolans, who lost Bernie to breast cancer in 2013, the Fighters’ lives have all been touched by the deadly disease. And the new group has won the backing of stars from TV, music and sport. Daytime telly queen Lorraine Kelly, 55, former X Factor favourite Sharon Osbourne, 62, and ex-Westlife singer Kian Egan, 34, were delighted to pose in the group’s pink T-shirts. England rugby union player Julian White, 41, champion hurdler Andy Turner, 34, and former Chelsea footballer Paul Canoville, 52, also wore the bright tops in support. The band are raising funds for Cancer Research UK. Most of the group had barely sung a note since their school days when mental health nurse Amelia Bailey, 45, got them together at Chapel Studios in South Thoresby, Lincolnshire. Now the disco tune, which reached number three in the charts in 1980, has words to inspire fundraising through Race for Life events. It includes the lyrics: “We’re in the mood for racing, fund raising. Ooh, just giving it all to fight. “We’re in the mood for racing, for cancer research, ooh from our head to our toes, we’ll find a cure, so grab your pink clothes and race out the door.” Other celebs backing the tune are Strictly’s Len Goodman, 70, presenters Phillip Schofield, 52, and Amanda Holden, 43, Brit actor Philip Jackson, 66, and TV host Jeremy Kyle, 49. I’m in the Mood writer Robert lost his wife Kath to bowel cancer in 1992 aged 37, leaving him to bring up their six children, aged between two and 15, alone. Celebrity factor: Sharron Osborne supporting The Cancer Fighters He said: “What Amelia and the girls have done is amazing and I feel honoured they’ve used In the Mood to raise money. “Not only did I lose Kath, but I also went to Bernie’s funeral which was incredibly touching. “I think the public will really take The Cancer Fighters to their hearts. They are lovely women of all ages and walks of life.” Amelia survived breast cancer in 2011. As she was recovering, her sister Allison Curruthers, 54, suffered the same illness. Six months later, in May last year, Amelia’s brother-in-law Nigel was diagnosed with secondary spinal cancer and died after just 47 days. Amelia, of Washingborough, Lincs, said: “After everything our family has been through I take every day as a blessing. If you’ve survived cancer you can’t just sit at home being miserable. You have to get out there and do something fantastic and this was it. “I’m a lucky one. All us ladies want to raise as much as we can for research so other people can say the same thing.” Nigel’s wife of 30 years Angie Goodwin said: “Losing someone to cancer makes you feel absolutely powerless. But making this single made lots of us feel we’ve gained some control over the disease.” The single is available from February 4 for 99p.
