If we really knew the things that prayer accomplishes, we would “pray constantly” as it says in 1st Thessalonians 5:17. A casual glance through the pages of the Bible shows a little of what prayer can accomplish: Abram’s prayer produced a son. Jacob’s prayer preceded reconciliation with his brother. Moses’ prayers delivered a nation from slavery. Moses prayer prevented a nation’s destruction. Israel’s prayers brought manna from heaven. Gideon’s prayers routed opposition. Manoah’s prayer brought guidance from God. Hannah‘s prayers gave her a child. David’s prayers restored his relationship with God. Solomon’s prayer blessed him with wisdom. Elijah’s prayer caused a drought. Elijah’s prayer raised a widow’s son from the dead. Elijah’s prayer brought down fire from heaven. Elijah’s prayer ended a drought. Elisha’s prayer raised a widow’s son from the dead. Ezra’s prayers revived a nation. Nehemiah’s prayer gained him favor in the sight of a king. Daniel’s prayer shut the mouths of lions. Jonah’s prayer saved him from the belly of the whale. Mary’s prayer made her the mother of the Messiah. The leper’s prayer brought healing. The Roman centurion’s prayer saved the life of his servant. The prayer of two blind men restored their sight. Peter’s prayer while walking on the Sea of Galilee saved him from drowning. Jesus’ prayer in the Gethsemane brought ministering angels to his side. The apostle’s prayers resulted in the Day of Pentecost. Peter’s prayer raised Dorcas from the dead. Cornelius’ prayers brought about the Gentile Pentecost. The Jerusalem church’s prayers delivered Peter from prison. Paul’s prayer healed the governor of Malta. Can you believe it? This is a partial list! A comprehensive list of what prayer accomplished just for the people whose stories are recorded in the Bible would be a book in itself. Little wonder, then, that James wrote: “Is any one of you in trouble? he should pray … Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray” (James 5:13-14).
