If you all may indulge me: This morning I lowered our flag to half staff in honor of the fallen of 9/11. As I did so, it was very dark, cloudy, blustery and almost chilly. Fall is, indeed, on its way. It had been raining last night, so the rope was cold, wet and hard to undo to lower, as if Old Glory was reluctant to surrender her proud position at the top of the staff to assume her position of grief, honor, and remembrance. The strong head reluctantly bowing. There was still a mist in the air that fogged my glasses and chilled my not fully awakened frame. I thought it all befittingly somber in light of the circumstances of the occasion. I retreated from the wind and mist and stood on my front porch for a few minutes, drinking my coffee and looking at Old Glory and reflecting on the flags I have presented to people in the past, their families, and on whether many people even notice or care about these things anymore. I remembered where I was on this date in 2001. I remembered a lot of things. There has been a lot of talk lately. For that matter, there has always been a lot of talk. If you listen to it long enough, you might just forget the ideals that Old Glory stands for, and the good that has been done around the globe under her immutable visage. As I stood there and pondered things to which I had no solution, I finally concluded that, as long as there are those of us to whom the flag still stands for something, to whom righting wrongs and helping those that cannot help themselves matters, all the jaw flapping and empty posturing of idiots will eventually come to naught. Remember, it does not say, In order to form a PERFECT UNION, instead it says, In order to form a MORE PERFECT UNION. We are still a work in progress. We should never stop improving, never give up the fight. Semper Rememorori---Always Remember!
