If you couple the insights offered by this graph with the understanding that through automation, manufacturing is rapidly approaching zero marginal cost of production, raw natural resources being the only real cost, creating an abundance of material goods becomes only a matter of resource management. This is great! We will have so much and people wont have to work to produce it! Of course, we have to figure out how to distribute the finished products in an equitable manner as very few people will have money to buy stuff without jobs, no matter how cheap it is to produce. And there is the matter of who owns the natural resources used for production. It becomes increasingly obvious that it is necessary for a new model of economic activity to emerge, perhaps just in time for us to be saved from all the disastrous unintended consequences of a competitive monetary market economy. When you have too many homes standing vacant, and the homeless filling our streets, grocery stores packed with food, and people struggling with starvation, people wasting countless hours and resources on the advertising of useless goods and services that most neither want nor need, it is time to radically change a rapidly failing economic model. More jobs are not the answer and totally unnecessary given our rapidly expanding technological capabilities. A fundamental shift of values is necessary on a global scale. We have right now all the technological understanding we need and more than enough resources available when managed in a sustainable manner to create a relative paradise of material abundance on our planet for everyone. If we fail to find a way to allow access to that abundance, our civilization will tear itself apart at the seams. It is time to rethink many of the traditional economic relationships within our societies. Labor for income, privatization of natural resources and the artificial limitation of access to produce, resources, ideas and innovations through the use of money are creating a rapidly accelerating artificial division within society between the rich and poor, a division that is the root cause of so many of the intractable problems we face. Solutions are emerging naturally, ways of exchanging resources, ideas and innovations, goods and services without the need for money, barter or trade. Understanding that this is the direction we must move anyway makes it easier to begin to let go of the old ways of doing things, the old economic relationships that are tearing us apart, forcing us to compete and kill one another to survive. Cooperative and collaborative efforts are leading the way towards a magnificent and sustainable future, a future that is available to us if we want it badly enough and we can change rapidly enough to allow it to emerge. Lets go for it! I am excited, how about you?
