If you had a dollar for every time someone uttered the phrase the next Michael Jordan, youd own Maui and Dubai, pay cash for Air Force One and replace Bill Gates as the richest human in America. This ridiculous process to name the next Michael Jordan has been underway since 1996 with names such as Jerry Stackhouse, Grant Hill, Penny Hardaway, Allen Iverson, Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady, Dwayne Wade and now Lebron James have at one point or the other prematurely and overzealously been referred to as the next Michael Jordan and all of them have failed to live up to that billing. This is due to no fault of the players mentioned above but rather owing to the fact that Michael Jordan is impossible to equal let alone surpass as the Greatest of all time to play any sport. The reason for that was because Michael Jordan was the man who turned basketball into the worlds street game. His influence and fame reached so far into the darkest corners of the world that people stopped playing their native sports and took to basketball, with a Jordan poster on the wall. He was the man who made me, a cricket crazy Sri Lankan kid back in the early 90’s to move away from his love for Cricket and begin a glorious love affair with the game of basketball. He was the man who proved that the name on the back of the team shirt can be bigger than the name on front of the team shirt. He was the man who became the shoe that made the company become a fortune 500 global empire that eventually turned him into a man rich beyond previous levels of imagination in sports history. The reason all of this happened was Michael Jordans genius and insane competitiveness to become a player so unimaginably great and incomparable that he seemed to deny physics, to wring gasps of awe from anyone who saw him even for 5 minutes and his incredible ability to carry his team on his back and WIN, WIN and WIN like never seen before in sporting history and become the undisputed standard by which excellence is measured in sport or pretty much any other walk of life for such an incredible once in a life time champion / winner he indeed was.
