If youre an ASM, be ready for tech. Go into the space, find out where props tables will be, find out where quick changes can happen, and find out where youll be during the show. Set up a desk (Or realistically, a music stand) for your script and paperwork, a place to put things that you cant deal with (Like a run sheet when you need to go onstage, that thing that the actor gave you that fell off of the scenic piece but you need your hands free for the quick change, etc), and a place to put your computer/charge your devices without making the speakers hum. Also, have your stuff ready! Tons of pencils. Hair ties. A few colors of spike tape. Glow tape. Scissors for the glow tape. A clipboard. Your paperwork - maybe taped to the wall if you need to do a lot of running. A headlamp to see what youre doing. A flashlight to charge glow tape. A multitool. A Sharpie to make labels. A dry erase marker so that you can check off your preshow list every day and erase it the next day. A first aid kit. Black and white gaff tape. Some of these things should belong to you, and the theatre should provide the others. Just make sure that you ask about it before tech starts so that no one has to wait for someone to find that box in that closet that has that stuff that you need - no one will think of these things unless you make your needs known, and if all of those things are taken care of, then damn. You have made it. If you have your backstage ready like this, and if you run the show as well as you prep it, then you will have no trouble getting work as an ASM, your stage managers will recommend you and send you work, and you will do well for yourself as a theatre professional.
