Im about to spend my first real day in Japan. (Its 7am on Saturday here.) My initial thoughts from riding the train for 5 hours yesterday are: - Japanese advertising is very, very different. See attached for examples. https://youtube/watch?v=LiA2LaewpOc - Tommy Lee Jones face is plastered all over Japan. Hes the spokesperson of Boss beer and is in the first one of these commercials - Riding the train I play a game called, Count the other westerners. I rode the train for ~5 hours yesterday, including rush hour. My score is 3. - Police wear white gloves. Their batons are tiny. Im not sure if they have tasers or they just bungee cord their guns to their shorts so they dont lose them. - Probably 20-30% of people wear surgical masks in public. My Google search Why do Japanese immediately autofilled, wear surgical masks. Apparently they do it to be considerate while sick, to avoid getting sick, to avoid allergies, and to avoid interaction. Seattle would love this. Many friends and articles told me its like another planet over here. I was still overwhelmed and surprised when I first stepped out of the train onto my street. More soon!
