Im actually surprised(and annoyed) by just how much people are against us naming our baby Pagan if its a girl. I knew there would be some who naturaly would be against it but its almost everyone. Even people who agree its a pretty name still stand against it and pull out many reasons ranging from the most popular They will be picked on by other kids. to Thats not a name, its a title. to my personal favorite People will be offended by it. It will make it hard for them to get a job or have friends. Im surprised because its almost both sides of our entire family who are asking us not to name our potential daughter this. Even people within the Pagan community have stated disagreement with the name for various reasons, none of which include any feeling it reflects badly on the word or breaks some unwritten law that you cant use it as a name. We have heard reasons that Thats not naming your baby, thats pushing your beliefs on them, yet these same people wouldnt dare ridicule a parent for naming their child Christian. And to my amazement there are actually people within the Pagan community who have named their children Christian. So obviously they cant really hold value to that argument. Its not only a completely excepted name, its so popular we have a worlds best selling book whos main character is named that, Christian Grey. Doesnt the prevalence of Christian being the countries currently most popular name blows the argument Pagan is not a name, its a religion out of the water? Whenever I do anything regarding my faith in the publics eye, like me hanging a Pentacle on my front door, me posting a 20 foot wide sign in December that read YULE next to a 7 foot tall Pentacle, or my daughters wearing Pentacles, I always ask myself How would the average christian respond if someone expressed offense to their equivalent of these things? It doesnt take much thought to know one would react with Oh youre offended, too bad. You have a problem with ____, then you have a problem with God. So when I hear the argument that the name Pagan may offend people I say the same thing, Too Bad. And in that same light I ask how would a christian parent respond to the notion that their child would be denied employment or friendship because of their name? They would most likely say the obvious Anyone who denies you employment just broke the law AND any employer or person who would not want to be associated with you because they are offended by your name is no one worthy of being associated with you in the first place. And I agree. Anyone would shun my daughter because of her name is no one I want my daughter being around or working for in the first place because I see it as a sign of poor character and dare I say, low morals. There have been a few that argue me doing this speaks more for me than my child, but I would say thats the case in ALL childrens names. All parents pick their childrens names based on their own personal taste and agendas. Doesnt a family naming their four sons John, Noah, Samuel and Matthew speak more about their parents love of the bible than their kids? But no one spends a second thinking on that, nor call those parents out on it. So why call me out on one name? All this goes to show the social stigma towards a word that I, and many in the community I call my own, see as a good word. A word with a negative stigma that we fight to remove. I feel my use of the word as my childs name is a step to normalizing the word, to shove it into the publics face as the #1 religion in this country has done with their name. So I say to those who dont want me to name my potential daughter Pagan, you better pray we have a boy, because we did.
