Im at Disneyland with my family today. We just went on the Christmas themed Its A Small World ride. What a wonderful ride that normally celebrates an appreciation and respect for the diverse cultures on this planet. Except that now, In honor of Christmas all of the many dolls and facades are decked out in Christmas lights and Christmas symbols while Christmas songs bellow in the background. And I was struck with the thought of how odd and possibly disrespectful it must feel for a foreign visitor to see their Buddhist, Hindu or Islamic countries cultural representation being festooned with symbols of a religious tradition that they dont celebrate. I imagine it would be the equivalent of an American citizen experiencing a ride in the Middle East where American toys were adorned with symbols of Ramadan. The concept of Its a small world after all. Seems to me, to be lost in translation. Any thoughts?
