Im curious about what people here think of this whole Bonfire Fest event... and by extension, what people think of the increasingly prominent role that package tour operators are playing in the development of Sagadas tourism industry. My own take on the latter is that there is an inherent conflict of interest. The tour operators are all about volume. They want to keep it cheap and attract ever larger numbers. Thats a problem because Sagada is poorly suited to mass tourism. A number of critical resources, water and parking space among them, have intrinsic limits, and many of the tourist attractions have limited carrying capacity. Perhaps a more important question: do the iSagada want their place to become a mountain version of Boracay or Puerto Galera? The question needs to be addressed, because thats the direction the tour operators want to go, and if Sagada doesnt control the operators, the operators will control Sagada.
