Im excited to share with you a groundbreaking victory more than three decades in the making that will save countless pigs, ferrets, and other animals from invasive and deadly military training exercises. Following an internal review of the Department of Defenses (DoD) use of animals in medical training, the agency determined that suitable simulation alternatives can replace the use of live animals in six major medical educational areas—including for certain trauma and other surgical training courses and infant and pediatric life support skills, which PETA has been advocating for years. The DoD wants this change made on the double. It has ordered all service branches to fully transition to the use of simulations in these programs by no later than January 1, 2015. The DoDs announcement is a monumental step forward and follows numerous letters and complaints filed by PETA, military and civilian medical experts as well as hundreds of thousands of e-mails from concerned PETA supporters. The DoD has heard us loud and clear. In recent years, PETA has made significant progress on this issue, including the following: • Persuading the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Army to scale back their use of animals substantially and to require that more personnel be trained exclusively with advanced simulators and other non-animal methods • Persuading the Army to replace its cruel use of monkeys in chemical-attack training exercises with human-like simulators • Persuading the Naval Medical Center San Diego, the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, and Madigan Army Medical Center to replace their use of cats and ferrets in pediatric intubation training with simulators Please join us in thanking the DoD for taking action to end animal use and urge it to continue to modernize its medical training program by completely ending the shooting, dismembering, burning, and killing of thousands of animals each year in horrific and archaic combat trauma drills. www2.peta.org/site/MessageViewer?em_id=159882.0&printer_friendly=1
